Meet Neilson Yazzie, A Barclay Mechanical Field Superintendent

Neilson Welding

Meet Neilson, one of our field superintendents. Neilson has been with Barclay Mechanical for almost three years. He started with us as a foreman, and is now one of our field superintendents over structural steel projects.

In just the past year, Neilson has worked for Barclay Mechanical on jobs in California, Florida, Texas, Big West Refinery (Utah), Hill Air Force Base (Utah), and weekend jobs in Milford and Scofield (Utah).

While each project is different, a typical day for Neilson starts at 6:30 a.m. and ends around 5:30 p.m. For most of Neilson’s projects, he and his men are working 6/10’s. This means they work six days a week for 10 hours a day. Sometimes, especially on the job in Texas, he would work 7/10’s every other week.

Neilson starts off his crew of five to 15 people each morning with a safety meeting. This meeting includes the scope of work for the day, potential hazards, and necessary safety steps that must be taken. After this brief, 15-minute meeting, he puts his team to work. Neilson then walks around to all of his team’s stations managing their structural work and supports. He ensures they are following the mechanical drawings perfectly or making the correct changes if things have been changed. Frequently throughout the day Neilson will jump in with his crew and help with necessary fitting or welding projects.

As the field superintendent, Neilson works directly with the client communicating the job’s progression, and the client communicates any job changes they have. In some situations, there is another Barclay Mechanical senior field superintendent overseeing the job Neilson is also working on. In this situation, Neilson works in conjunction with that Barclay Mechanical field superintendent and reports to him.

Neilson has been doing structural steel work since 2008. His expertise and knowledge have been extremely helpful at Barclay Mechanical.  He has lead countless groups of men through structural steel projects, each time training them to be better fitters, welders and laborers.

Neilson feels blessed to be married to his beautiful wife Kordeenis and has six wonderful children. His wife and children live in the Four Corners area.

While spare time is hard to come by when you work six or seven days a week, Barclay Mechanical strives to offer frequent weekend breaks, or week-long breaks so our leaders can spend time with their families. Neilson has had many situations where he has had to be away from his family for an extended period. Barclay Mechanical always does its best to make sure he gets the much-needed phases with his family. When asked what Neilson enjoys doing in his free time his answer is just that, spending quality family time with his wife and kids.

How We Became an Industrial Mechanical Contractor

Barclay Mechanical, Inc. has almost 40 years of providing professional welding services and heavy industrial contracting services to customers in Utah, Idaho and surrounding states. The company’s roots go back to January 1, 1980 when founder, Michael D. Barclay, originally established Barclay Welding in Idaho. He had “welding in his blood,” so to speak. His father, Daniel P. Barclay, was a highly-skilled welder and Idaho State University’s 1962-1970 Department Head for its welding program.

As Barclay Welding grew, Mike changed its name to Barclay Mechanical, Inc. to more adequately describe the variety of services and products it provided, such as industrial mechanical construction. In 1993, Mike started another branch of Barclay Mechanical Services in Manti, Utah, which is now owned by three of his sons, John Barclay, Scott Barclay and Kenneth Barclay. Although the company’s welding shop is physically located in Manti, Utah 98% of their projects are outside of Sanpete County. In fact, only 50% of their work is in Utah with the other 50% being in other states.
